Echocardiographic evaluation of left-to-right shunt in ventricular septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus

Abstract

|
153 patients with either a ventricular septal defect or a patent ductus arteriosus were assessed by ech3cardiography and cardiac catheterization.
Left atrial dimension was expressed either as a function of the body surface area(LAD can perm¢¥- BSA), or as a multiple of the aortic root dimension(LAD/AR), and was comp¡þared with the shunt volume as determined by oxymetry. A good relation was found between Qp/Qs and the LAD/AR (r=0.75) and between Qp/Qs and the LAD/m¢¥- BSA (r=0.685) in ventricular septal defect.
A poor relation was found between Qp/Qs and the LAD/AR (r=0.365), and between Qp/as and the LAD/m¢¥- BSA (r=0.351) in patent ductus arteriosus.
The value of echocardiography is in separating large from small shunts and in adding a dimension to the follow-up of the ventricular septal defect.
